Utility bills for Los Angeles residents to go up by 28% to help fund renewables - happy with that?
< < this question requires some context, so please read through before responding thanks > > The LA Times reports that electricity bills in the Los Angeles Area will have to rise by between 6 % and 28.4 % to help fund solar and wind power renewable energy as part of the war on climate change.Quote " " Appearing with labor and environmental leaders, Mayor Villaraigosa said the proposed increases would ensure that the DWP meets his goal of securing 20 % of its energy from renewable sources such as wind and solar by Dec. 31." " According to the LA Times, " Businesses would see increases in the average bill ranging from 20 % to 26 %" but would get a reduction if they agreed to install solar panels to sell electricity back to the utility at favorable rates. This would help to quote " address the DWP's failure to collect enough money to cover the cost of existing renewable energy initiatives" .However, neighbourhood groups pointed out that the board of the utility company were all appointed by the Mayor himself, and questioned why such steep rises were needed when the utility has such a large surplus of profits that it is contributing over 220 Million Dollars to the city's budget every year. However, the Mayor, green groups and the unions hit back at this QUOTE " " Villaraigosa said the money would help pay for the hiring of " green doctors" to evaluate the energy efficiency of homes and stepped up efforts to help residents obtain energy efficient lightbulbs and refrigerators. One union leader said residents would support the increases once they knew how the money would be spent." When they see that there is a clear cut plan to do what we need to do in this city which is to be more green, to create jobs then I think that most people . . . are willing to go along with that," said Maria Elena Durazo, executive secretary treasurer of the L.A. County Federation of Labor" " So, the question do you agree with the union leader that people, especially poorer people and the elderly on fixed incomes, will be " happy" to go along with rises in electricity of up to 28 %?.Source latimes.com news local la me dwp rates16 2010mar16,0,7870063.story?track rss.EDIT Antarctica So you don't think the elderly or the sick will be big users of electricity then? You know, fripperies like heat in winter, air conditioning in summer, TV to watch as no one visits them . . . Maybe if they think of all the Co2 they are preventing from entering the atmosphere they will get a warm glow inside which will keep them warm instead..EDIT Pergminer All due respect, stop talking rot. How have i misrepresented the article when i state in my opening sentence that prices will " rise between 6 % and 28.4 %" ??That is EXACTLY what the article said and i've repeated it right at the start of my question.I guess the truth hurts, huh Pegminer?
Even if we could one day meet all of our energy needs through renewables?
Doesn't it make sense to use nuclear power in the mean time?If we do could stop using fossil fuels in 50 years without nuclear power, why not end the use of fossil fuels in 30 years and spend the next 20 of the 50 years replacing nuclear power with renewable power?Sir BloodletterNo one died at Fukushima. Do you honestly believe that sea levels can rise without people dieing?< 70,000 years from now our decedents could still be exposed to our nuclear waste when there's some kind of accident or disaster or even just exploration. We don't know what's going to happen with civilization in the next 70,000 years> The most important long lived isotope is plutonium 239, which can be used as fuel. If you are concerned about nuclear war, the most likely way to cause a nuclear war is rising sea levels.
Can renewables really make up 100% of the UK's energy needs? If not, what sort of percentage is viable?
And could you give references please?
If we need 1000 Gigawatts to drive our economy with electric cars -is that even possible with renewables? ?
It seems that coal and ethanol are environmentally wrong. Wind and solar are politically popular. Can we get there with wind and solar? Nuclear seems very plausible. And I love Obama. Are the Dems wrong on nuclear? Does this come down to " environmentalists for nuclear energy' at the end of the day?
Will renewables really be more environmentally friendly?
I found that waste from 50 years of nuclear reactor operation could fit in a single football field, amounting to 77,000 tons. We discard 179,000 tons of batteries per year and they contain toxic heavy metals. So, I know Germany is spending $275 billion to research energy storage technologies so their renewables will be able to replace the shut down nuclear plants but if they are using " giant" batteries are they producing just as much waste as a nuclear power plant would?
Why don't 'Man-did-it' Global Warming advocates discuss the HIGH cost of renewables?
It seems to me when looking at the taxpayer subsidy per unit of energy subsidy per MillionKWH , that Solar and Wind are 'out of this world' in terms of cost to the taxpayer.... Especially considering that the claim of 'Man did it' Global Warming is unproven. Just imagine what we as Taxpayers are going to have to pony up if the Warmers have their way and cover the land with Wind turbines and solar panels If they are so great, then why can't the private sector manage them without their sinful taxpayer subsidies?? Where can i find renewables global status report 2008?
i searched on ren21.net but there is no report for 2008.. need recommendations or links where i could find them. many thanks
Briefly as possible, how to these types of renewables produce energy?
SolarWaveTidalGeothermalBiomassWood fuel
Gordon Brown wants to increase UK's renewables from 2% to 6% to lead global change!?
Shouldn't this be more like 96 % to ensure power suppliesduring " bad" weather?
Why is it taking us so long so develop vehicles that run on alternative energy sources, like renewables?
Do we already have the technology to do this, and if so why isn't development being pursued more vigorously? Is it anything to do with the amount of money still left to be made from oil?
