Solar energy for home - does my solar electric system have to include batteries?

Question: Solar energy for home - does my solar electric system have to include batteries?

I'm going for a solar electric system in my home to reduce energy bills and save money.

Batteries are required only if you want backup power in case of a utility outage. Solar energy for home use is basically meant to be 'on-grid' - i.e., connected with your utility supplier to reduce dependence on them, but not completely eliminate them. This means, you have 'both' your solar electric system and your utility-supplied power available at all times, working in tandem. Any excess energy that your system generates is sent back to the utility company, which results in you getting lower bills. The savings potential through this method can be both huge and lifelong.

If you want to use electricity at night

Sure.. batteries store the collected energy. the solar panel receives solar energy and transforms it to electric (see photovoltaic). this electric energy is stored in the batteries to make it available for use. sizing the batteries is an important issue. you should well size the batteries for your house.

The answer is no. You can use solar power when you have enough sunlight and you will continue to use your local utility when your system doesn't have enough light and during the night.

No. That's what grid tie in is about. The electric company uses the excess energy you produce during the day so it doesn't have to use so much above baseload power. At night or on cloudy days it pays you back the same amount of power. This is good for the power company because it's night time power costs less to produce.
