Solar energy for home - does my solar electric system have to include batteries?

Question: Solar energy for home - does my solar electric system have to include batteries?

I'm going for a solar electric system in my home to reduce energy bills and save money.

Batteries are required only if you want backup power in case of a utility outage. Solar energy for home use is basically meant to be 'on-grid' - i.e., connected with your utility supplier to reduce dependence on them, but not completely eliminate them. This means, you have 'both' your solar electric system and your utility-supplied power available at all times, working in tandem. Any excess energy that your system generates is sent back to the utility company, which results in you getting lower bills. The savings potential through this method can be both huge and lifelong. No, and in fact, probably 95% of the residential solar installations do not use batteries. That just adds 50% to the price of the system over time, and a hassle for maintenance. If you get bids from professional installers, they will explain how all this works to you. Be careful of those sites that suggest you can build your own system for just a few hundred dollars, if you just buy their information. A bid from a professional costs you nothing, and they will also explain everything involved.
