Solar/wind power for homes?

Question: Solar/wind power for homes?

(Posted by: doc.2.b. on 2010-06-08 12:07:17)

Is there such thing as a solar panel that also has a wind turbine system attached for homes? (Kind of a duel system that looks like a solar panel but has the turbines on the actual panel)

System are pretty much custom made these days so if you have gobs of money you could get a system like the one you described. People that live in remote areas with no access to the power grid have been doing it for years.

Depending on your location you may want to go with one or the other or a combination of both. Wind energy is easier to do yourself from products you can pick up used

I use solar cell panels, inverters & storage batteries, I also have a unused small boat type silent wind generator which I do not use due to needing planning permission from the local council & I live in a council house and we are worried about being thrown out.

I haven't heard of a wind/ solar package system, not that somebody out there isn't selling one. As I see it, you need to separately acquire solar and wind collectors, which can be effectively paralleled to charge batteries or a grid-tie inverter.

Such a concept does exist. An experimental station was built in Spain. You can see it here: youtube.com/ watch?v= XCGVTYtJEFk Essentially it combines a hot air solar thermal panel with a wind turbine. Calculations tell us that a bigger station is more efficient, but this is not to say it cannot work on a home scale. It is like a hydroelectric generating facility in reverse. Instead of water falling to run a turbine it uses hot air rising to run the turbine. A more modest use of the same principal would be to use the air flow to draw hot air from your home. All of this would have to be specifically designed for your home as there are no commercial systems available. The good news is that hot air solar thermal panels are relatively easy and cheap to build.
