Hawt wind turbine energy calculation and blades surface effect?
in wind energy calculation there is no effect of the blades area?only swept area?because calculating one example 3 blades, 2 meters diameter each blade 1 meters calculation is p 0.5xair density cubic meter kg x swept area square meter x cube of wind speed meter s.assuming 10 m s. 1500 watts.this means if a 150 kg weight hang on a mill that has 30 cm diameter ,so per turn it would lift it 1meter.it should turn it 60 rpm min.this means each blades tip must be pushed with around 20 kg power.which is impossible with 10m s. wind.can anyone explain this including blade surface area and its effect? thank you.

Exactly how good are wind turbines?
I had a conversation with a friend recently a freelance geophysicist working in the offshore oil industry. Although he accepts the reality of AGW, he is passionately against wind turbines.Now, and without knowing a great deal about them, I had assumed that they were justified as being able to contribute to a lower carbon energy supply, but he was adamant that they were a waste of money From memory, his main objection was that they only produce energy when the wind is blowing and the time they were most needed was when there was no wind, as this is when temperatures fall the most.Other objections were When the wind was not blowing, they had to be kept turning requiring energy in order to protect the bearings from damage.They were inefficient, incurring high transmission losses of around 30 % presumably it is considered uneconomic to step up the voltage for individual turbines They are unsightly spoiling the landscape. There may be other objections too considering all of these, do wind turbines have a place in a low carbon energy supply?... or could the money be better spent elsewhere?Ok thanks everyone. There seems to be plenty against them, less in favour.My own non expert view on the above points are as follows.Of course, if the wind isn't blowing, they are not going to work. But there is usually enough to turn them so long as they are producing usable power for a lot of the time, that will mean less needs to be generated using conventional means. If they need to be kept turning, I would expect the cost would be very small compared to the overall costs.As for efficiency, it is not necessarily an argument against the petrol engines in our cars are only around 30 % efficient, even less so around town Unsightly? That's a subjective question. Personally I don't have a problem most of the time, occasionally, in areas of conservation, national parks etc, perhaps they are best avoided. There are dozens of them in the area where I live mostly you don't see them, when you do, they are no worse than all the buildings, chimneys, pylons etc that already l... that already litter the horizon. On balance, I've always liked them.Having said that, If I became convinced they were not worth while, then they would be a constant reminder of our folly The real question is, given the need to reduce CO2 my opinion as a global warming proponent , are these the best way or are there better alternatives for the money. It could be that other renewables have their own problems so a combination of solutions would need to be adopted, including nuclear Finally, if there is an objection on cost, how could this be brought down? less subsidies to the land owners perhaps ...?

Please talk to Sen Alexander who wants to protect our national Lake and Ocean shorelines, mountains and National Parks, Wildlife Refuges, National Seashores from wind turbine development. i was planning on buying a wind turbine because the solar panels are way too expensive. around my area there isnt much wind so i was thinking if i get a wind turbine then i can some how attach a fan motor to it and let it spin the wind turbine. will this work?the fan engine is about 50 watts while the wind turbine will be producing about 1.5kw

I'll honestly probably never buy them, but i'm really curious about finding practical, affordable solutions for individuals looking for renewable energy sources.Amazon.com has a wind turbine with generator for $600 that generates 400 watts of energy. A space heater requires 1500 and would provide a significant amount of heat for a small home, so it would require maybe three turbines. It might be worth it. . . Hello,I am looking for a relatively cheap and simple charge controller to connectone solar panel and one small wind turbine to a charge controller that would connect to a battery.Could you recommend to me to such a controller?Now since there would be times that the solar panel would be producing no WATTS night and times that the wind turbine would be producing 0 watts no wind , I want it to have no effect on one another but yet charge my battery, how should I connect them?Many Thanks,JonathanMiami, FL, USA
